Six Sigma training - The DHI Approach

The DHI approach to Six Sigma training qualifications and Transactional Black Belt Six Sigma is based on the same principles as those applied by the other pioneers of this concept.

Six Sigma is now a mature product and like all training programmes suffers from market saturation with literally thousands of organisations claiming to be authentic Six Sigma service providers around the globe.

Inevitably this competition has led many of these providers to severely compromise the quality and quantity of training with the result that there are many who believe they have a Six Sigma Black Belt certificate but which has a fraction of its true potential value.

Integrity

We have never compromised our training for marketing reasons and are proud of its unblemished integrity. David Hutchins was present at the original announcement by Motorola at the Baldrige Award ceremony in the USA in 1987. The core of the  Six Sigma concept is based on the teachings of Drs Deming, Dr Juran and Professor Ishikawa. Dr Juran  was represented in the UK by David Hutchins International from the early 1980s until Dr Juran's retirement from international travel nearly a decade later. Our training is based on those core beliefs and will never be compromised by market pressures. A DHI Six Sigma qualification has both real value and real integrity.

Qualification

Training to DHI Six Sigma Black Belt level involves 20 days of workshops and instruction which are spread over 4 months and split into four  5 day blocks. Between each teaching block students are required to carry out a project formally approved by their organisation to demonstrate both the relevance of the previous training to their work and their understanding of the concepts covered.

'Transactional Black Belt Six Sigma'

Transactional Six Sigma is the term used for Six Sigma training for those in non industrial environments and absorbs the Hoshin Kanri Policy Development, Policy Deployment and Policy Control processes for total business performance improvement.

Award criteria.

The award of Six Sigma Black Belt requires the student to present a project which demonstrates the understanding and use of a wide variety of the tools covered and the organisational principles such that the project presented has produced a net yield of more than 100 000 Euros or Dollar or Pound Sterling equivalent. In some cases where a group of students are from the same organisation, they may present a group project provided that they can demonstrate the individual contributions of the participants.

Award structure

For convenience and to show the level of attainment, qualification to the level of each block is recognised by progressive Martial Arts terms (we refer to Six Sigma as being the martial art of business improvement). These are Six Sigma Yellow Belt, Six Sigma Green Belt, Six Sigma Brown Belt and Six Sigma Black Belt.

In addition to these formal levels there is a Six Sigma White Belt level which is informal and indicates that the participant has attended a one or two day DHI Six Sigma Awareness Course.

At the other extreme we have qualification to Master Six Sigma Black Belt. This is not a course in itself but is awarded following the completion of a number of Six Sigma Black Belt Projects, management of a company wide Six Sigma programme which includes the teaching of Six Sigma teams to Green Belt level and ranking at an appropriate level of management responsibility within the host organisation.

Location of Courses

  • Public courses.

Currently, DHI Six Sigma training courses are conducted in the UK, Hungary and South Africa (in conjunction with QSI based at the very well appointed Blue Hills Conference centre near Midrand between Johannesburg and Pretoria).
  • In House courses.

Six Sigma programmes can be even more effective when the Six Sigma training is given 'in house'. This way we have the opportunity to help implement the Six Sigma programme into the organisation, deal with any matters arising and to make the training to be consistent with organisational needs.
