Cell Manufacture, use of Multi-Skilling and SMED
Cell manufacture was briefly popular in the West during the 1970s but faded from view probably because its real value was not well appreciated. Cell working comes into its own in situations where the costs of rearranging the cells is low. Otherwise, when the movement of plant or equipment is high and where there are frequent changes in process activities due to modifications to product design then cell manufacture might not be economic. During the course both the merits and potential dangers of cell based manufacture will be fully discussed.
This course and others in the Lean Manufacturing series are based on David Hutchins extensive experience in Production Engineering in the automotive industry, the management of Quality and more than 30 years intensive research into Japanese management systems. David has visited most Toyota plants in Japan and in the UK, several of its suppliers including Nippon Denso and NGK Spark Plugs, Nissan both in Japan and the UK together with Calsonic, Honda and Hino Motors. He has also worked with Ford in the UK and Germany, Iran Khodro in Iran and parts suppliers in Hungary and Tunisia. It has been said of David in Japan that he is the European that understands Japanese management better than any other Westerner that we have met.
This course will also be supported by one of the best trainers in the Lean Manufacturing field.
In order to evaluate its possible use, techniques such as the string diagram can be used to determine economic product flow and reduce travel times and distances.
Multi-skilling is essential if Cell Manufacture is to be considered but this concept is valuable in its own right so is included in this event.
SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) is a term that implies the use of Dies but the principles are relevant to all processes and set ups. We have witnessed the most incredible reduction in set up times as a consequence of the work covered in this course. In one case, from more than 8 hours to 45 seconds!
